Get Hands-On at the Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum
If you have little kids who love to touch, explore, and play, the Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum is a must! This interactive museum has lots of exhibits that will engage the kids and help them learn through play. The museum is open from Wednesday – Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; tickets must be purchased in advance.
Handley Library
The Handley Library in Old Town Winchester has been serving Winchester residents since 1913. The building’s gorgeous architecture was designed to resemble an open book with the rotunda serving as the spine and the two wings as the open pages. In addition to thousands of books, the library also offers digital books, meeting rooms, printing services, and community programs. You can find your new favorite book from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
George Washington’s Office Museum
For a time, George Washington worked in the Winchester area and established his reputation as a skilled commander. You can visit the office he worked in – a small log building – and learn more about the 15 months that Washington spent in in the building. During his time here, he oversaw the construction of Fort Loudoun, though only a well remains of the fort now. The museum includes some of Washington’s personal possessions and a scale model of the town in 1755 when Washington worked in the cabin.

Museum of Shenandoah Valley
The Museum of Shenandoah Valley has art and exhibits that teach visitors about the people and places of the region. Some of the exhibits include miniature houses and furniture from various time periods so that visitors can get a true glimpse of life in the past. The gardens surrounding the museum are incredibly beautiful, they’re the perfect place to spend a peaceful afternoon.
